States by Edward Said Essay Example

States by Edward Said Paper Taylor Stephan Section 2 Exam â€Å"States† 1. Edward Said emphasizes the scattered, alienated nature of the Palestinian people. In my opinion, Said clearly displays that it is unfair to ask â€Å"What is it you Palestinians want? †. Palestine, once recognized as a country and a community, is now shattered into a plethora of pieces. These pieces, or people each with memories and experiences, were sprinkled all across the world. It would seem impossible to share national pride when one’s country does not technically exist. Palestinians do not have a unified home where they can share their sense of culture and their similar beliefs. Many Palestinians â€Å"speak of awdah (return)† (650). They want to restore their country, and glue together the broken pieces. Even if Palestine could be restored as a country, would it ever be the same? One cannot erase history. The Palestinians can never truly regain what they want, which is their identity and ethnocentricity. Questions can easily be misinterpreted. Misunderstandings due to poor communication have appeared throughout history. For example, in the 1940’s, America threatened Japan with an embargo, unless they cut relations with Japan. The Japanese mistakenly took this as a threat to their national security. The confusion caused the attack on Pearl Harbor, which is an extremely important event in American history. Japan and the United States were opposing forces, but trade held together the peace. This misunderstanding caused more hostility between the two groups. 2. Said explains that the photograph ignites negative, yet positive feelings about the condition of the Palestinian people. Said shows that this picture reflects symbols of vulnerability and disarray throughout the Palestinians. It appears to be out of place under the coverage of the trees. Said is very passionate for his own people. He has a great deal of emotional discomfort seeing a photographic display of the dislocation of his own people. I do not know what it feels like to lose my identity and be viewed through a skeptic’s eyes. Although this picture does not appear to incite certain emotions and feelings in myself, it is plausible for Said connect his feelings. Said understands the meaning of displacement with regards to his people’s history. Extra Credit: I can still remember the tragedy of September 11th. I was in second grade. All of the students were immediately sent home or picked up by their parents. I did not understand the images on the news. It almost seemed like a surreal action film. My aunt was on a flight to New York City that day, but luckily she arrived safe. I respect the people and rescue crew involved during September 11th. I think they displayed a deep sense of care for fellow Americans. I hope that the directly affected families have some sense of peace all of these years later. Excerpt from Management Project by Arde R. Reyes Tags: business feasibility study, Snack Stand Feasibility study Category: Sample Feasibility Study | Comments Off Sugar Mill Feasibility Study March 2, 2009, 8:04 am Name of the Enterprise This proposed sugar mill shall be called as Sweet Sugar Incorporated, obviously sugar is sw eet and sweet is sugar. That’s why it shall be called as Sweet Sugar Incorporated. Sweet Sugar Incorporated shall have its own plant located in Sitio Maguindong, Luakan, Dinalupihan, Bataan. The site was chosen because its strategic location, where the supplies of public and private services are adequate and labor supply and raw materials are readily available. Sources of Raw Materials The plant shall have its own sugarcane plantation near the mill and the plantation shall be adequate in land area that will produce the needed raw material for sugar. Availability of Transportation The plant site is strategically located in Sitio Maguindong, Luakan, Dinalupihan, Bataan where transportation is not a problem. The plant is readily accessible to the workers. The finished sugar can be readily delivered to the market. Project Long Range Objective The Sweet Sugar Incorporated shall stick to its obligation and responsibility to its consumers of providing and producing the highest quality of sugar. No toxic materials shall be used or if there is, it should be properly disposed. It also respond to the needs of the barangay where it is located in order to help its progress. The Sweet Sugar Incorporated shall be the number one product and supplier of high-grade sugar throughout Luzon and its neighboring provinces, and if expansion is needed, it shall be done without overlooking its primary objectives. Mode of Financing Financing shall come from the shares of the stockholders/owners of the Sweet Sugar Incorporated. If ever the shares can’t cover up the expenses of constructing the plant before its operation, the Sweet Sugar Incorporated shall apply for loans which will give the maximum output for the plant. When business is already in operation, its liabilities and loans shall be paid from the sugar revenue Market Study As Bataan is situated geographically near the center of the Philippines, the finished product can be easily transported to the neighboring provinces in the country. Manila, the leading distribution center in the Philippines will be recipient of greater bulk of the product. Analysis of Market Demand and Supply Sugar is one of the primary commodities of the people, thus it is very important to have big supply that will cover up the big demand for sugar. The establishment of this sugar mill will greatly help our fellow Filipinos and most of all, our economy. This sugar mill will increase the sugar supply in the market, thus lessening our importation of sugar which is more expensive in cost. Market and Marketing Strategy Vigorous effort should be expanded to secure a market before a commitment is made to build a sugar mill if it would be most desirable to have the financial participation of one or more major users who can guarantee the purchase of substantial portion for the procedure production. During the past years, several overtures were made in this direction which revealed the opportunities existing. Scale and Volume The receiving of raw materials supply condition market potential and engineering should be considered. It would have production line which represent 769,434 tons per unit day. The output of the plant will depend on the production conditions. Sugar Marketing Operation The structure of general framework of market situation is already been said of the manner in which selling, shipping, financing and all other commercial aspect of marketing are out inside the general framework. These function rarely been described except by and for the specialist concerned with them. They are the essential link, however, providing the customers with that they want and the sugar industry with their income. The successful selling of the product ultimately determine the prosperity of every one in industry if it s not sold successfully all the efforts of the farmers, millers and readiness with their employees and the most of business which supply and service them will suffer. The final customers are their most important millions of housewives buying sweets or soft drinks not only 4 lbs. of sugar and tin of golden syrup but also the tin of jam. Market Distribution Pricing Pricing s hould follow the established market prices and practices which in turn are determined by the forces of demand and supply, however because of uncertainty of sugar during the start up period, some prices concessions should be made in order to break into market. A suggestion that is to 20% reduction from established market prices be affected on the first year output. Consumer Surveys Everyone is using sugar everyday, but assumed of sugar feeds are centrally as possible within the area of cane fields, as this will facilitate the transportation of cane with less rolling stock and other fixed charges for their department. Moreover, easy cane supply, so necessary for a economical grinding, will secure to the factory. Risk Management Stratgic Framework Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Risk Management Stratgic Framework - Essay Example Testing effectiveness is also a good method in determining whether or not risk management is creating a higher level of benefit in contrast to the costs of implementation. Performance management should include evaluation and the monitoring of the implementation strategy in order to continue assessing value of the methods of risk management that are being used.1 Question 2: There are a number of responsibilities the public has in terms of risk management. First, it is the responsibility of each individual to make sure that the data is not used responsibly, and that they utilize common sense in protecting their personal identity. Although identity theft is very difficult to prevent, using practical applications of common sense in terms of data supports personal protection, which contributes to overall risk that can come from the use of an individuals identity in order to infiltrate or corrupt data in organizations. Taking immediate action when there has been a clear violation of data is also essential in helping to inform organizations that a breach has occurred. With the help of individuals, organizations and public institutions can help support rapid action against infiltration and corruption which is of benefit to the organization and the individual who participate in the benefits of the organization. Hong Kongs Economic and Sustainable Growth Policies

Hong Kongs Economic and Sustainable Growth Policies Chief Executive Office of the Chief Executive Tamar Hong Kong In my capacity as the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, I take pressure to write to you express my views on specific economic policies which are the essential features of Hong Kong’s economic development and the sustainable growth. From that perspective, the Hong Kong Government (HKSAR) should concern various factors within the region, in terms of the introduction of junk food tax, human resources and labour force, international trade and technological forces, environment protection and urban renewal planning etc, which are directly affected the social and economic conditions in Hong Kong. This paper addresses to how the HKSAR to reach this position and how it sustains its comparative advantages in conducting meaningful and purposive economic policies in short, medium and long-term over the next five years.. Short-term goal: The introduction of junk food tax The Chamber suggests the introduction of junk food tax on fattening foods or beverages by the HKSAR. According to the 2012 Behavioural Risk Factor Survey (2012), it revealed that 36.6% of the Hong Kong population aged 18 64 was classified as overweight. Therefore, Junk food tax refers to a tax placed upon fattening foods or beverages on attempt to reduce saturated fat consumption, from December 2011 to November 2012 Denmark introduced It is generating support in America, a country with rising obesity rates. http://www.tax-news.com/news/Healthy_Revenues_From_Mexican_Junk_Food_Tax____64781.html http://cheaphealthygood.blogspot.hk/2010/03/junk-food-tax-reader-ideas-opinions-and.html http://www.studymode.com/essays/Junk-Food-Tax-1398531.html Hong Kong has a simple, predictable and low tax system. Medium-term goal:- Human resources and labour force As recently the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom report has mentioned that Hong Kong is rated as the freest economy in the world (Opulentus Overseas Careers Pvt Ltd 2015). The Chamber suggests the adoption of women workers that promotes a balanced and gender equality in our local labour market. Although some commented that the roles of women should be stayed at home to look after the children, it is even less true in the modern society. This is because the aging population and the low fertility rate will give rise to a population deficit, it leads the government encourage more women back to labour market (China Economic Net 2013). As of the latest government edition of â€Å"Women and Men in Hong Kong – key statistics† showed that there was shortage of men in Hong Kong. It represents there are only 864 men for every 1,000 women (The Census and Statistics Department 2014). In order to develop women’s employment opportunities, the HKSAR may consider encouraging women to return to work by providing additional employment training and tools, for example, on-the- job training. Moreover, it would be good to introduce whole-day child care services and after-school care service which could eliminate the concern of working women for the well-being of their families. I believe such approaches are favourable to Hong Kong’s economic growth and beneficial to economic production. This help to increasing the supply of labour and will raise labour productivity in medium-term. Medium-term goal: International trade and technological forces Following to the open door policy, Hong Kong is now a major trade and financial centre where depends heavily on trade. Nevertheless, many countries now regard Hong Kong as a developed economy and exclude its products from preferential export treatment, such as subject to quota requirements and suffer higher tariff rates (Augustine 2003, pp. 93-5). To tackle the trade restriction, the HKSAR should appeal to the World Trade Organization through international negotiation with foreign countries which able to promote the growth of industries and conduct the international trade relationships. On the other hand, we recognise that developing a global network may also create a new global economy powered. With the rapid shopping online nowadays, the use and integration of information and communication technologies in business has revolutionized relationships within organizations and those between individuals and organizations (Totonchi Kakamanshadi 2011, p. 270). Therefore, the HKSAR should bring about investment in technology innovation to enable cross-border trading activity without the constraints of business location, scale and time zone. It probably would imitate the shopping engine, like Tobo in China which has increased its e-commerce offerings, makes online shopping easier and more efficient. This strategy allows Hong Kong to maintain substantial economy growth with the increased logistics demand and will bring in new revenue to the industry. Long-term goal:- Environment protection Increasingly, global warning, holes in the ozone layer and population growth etc, are some of the major problems facing in our city. These caused adverse effects of our health and the image of the city. Responses to these problems seem likely to be driven by government. It is suggested that the HKSAR re-examine our environmental protection policies with the implementation of new sustainability policies to ensure Hong Kong people are in full awareness of environment protection and conservation. For example, a move by government to encourage the use of alternative sources of energy such as solar energy that is advocated energy saving living. We are also highly recommended the HKSAR tend to plant as much as trees not only in our country parks, but also along the roadside and around the schools. This is because tree plantation in our community is to help offset the emission of carbon dioxide and stop the global warming. As a result, the standard of living will be increased and we will become healthier that enriched the life of Hong Kong people to future generation. Our economy will also grow and benefit from spending less on healthcare and increasing of the labour productivity. Long-term goal:- Urban renewal planning It is no doubt that the land in Hong Kong is always a highly scare resource. In view of this, the HKSAR should take an active role in maximum the utilization of the scare urban land. The Chamber suggests that undertaking high-density development as well as builds more public rental housing onto the housing market in the next five years. For example, the HKSAR could probably redevelop the old public housing estates to improve the quality of urban living and increase in housing supply. Effective land uses from high –density living will provide support to the HKSAR’s long-term housing policy. Subject to the high-density building development, it is not only helps provide scale economies, but also allows Hong Kong residents more likely to be affordable. These are also ideal help to reduce the pressure to develop open spaces and release more lands for social infrastructure and services. In the longer-term perspective, it is therefore to support economic stability and prosperity which is to meet the market demand. http://www.medwelljournals.com/fulltext/?doi=pjssci.2010.244.253 Many countries embarked as rebuilding efforts, characterized by demolition of old dilapidated areas, large-scale clearance of city slums and construction of modern high-rises after the war. Large-scale redevelopment created many social problemsand encouraged many city planners and scholars to question its effects and functionalities. Indeed, large scale renewal and redevelopment efforts have been criticized for neglecting the complexities of the urban fabric; it is not only uneconomical but also damages the city’s heritage and degrades various socio-environmental qualities. http://ucsfhr.ucsf.edu/index.php/pubs/hrguidearticle/chapter-12-managing-diversity-in-the-workplace/ http://en.ce.cn/subject/exclusive/201311/07/t20131107_1721448.shtml it would be good to introduce more specific incentives for women in the older age groups to upgrade their skills and knowledge Our economy will grow and benefit from these changing demographics if businesses commit toOpulentus Overseas Careers Pvt Ltd The Government welcomes more concerted efforts to build a more caring, compassionate and harmonious society. It is therefore most encouraging to note the growing interest of the business sector and the more affluent members of our community in poverty alleviation. We stand ready to work hand in hand with all sectors to improve the well-being of the disadvantaged and light up their lives with hope and dignity. Reference List A. J. Thousand Acres Essay -- essays research papers

A Thousand Acres, by Jane Smiley, is a story of incest, ignorance, and the imperialistic voice of the almighty man. Ignorance of being lead by a man, particular views of Rose and Ginny, and domesticated to believe that "When we are good girls and accept our circumstances, we're glad about it. . .When we are bad girls, it drives us crazy" (99). The imperialistic voice usually comes from the omnipotent Larry Cook, Rose, Ginny, and Caroline’s father. And the incestuous relations only entangle this dysfunctional family. The eldest daughter, Ginny, is the most loyal and idolizes her father. The second eldest daughter, Rose, is linked to her father through Ginny, who keeps her from losing faith in him. Rose questions whether the loyalty that Ginny shows her father makes her obedient or if her reluctance to judge him proves her ignorance. Rose has two daughters, Pammy and Linda, who are also first hand witnesses to the episodes of the Cook family trauma, but remain dormant to what goes on around them. Caroline, the youngest daughter has left the one thousand acres of land they grew up on to become a lawyer. Caroline is married to Frank Ras, whom also is a lawyer and they do not have any children. The book is narrated from Ginny’s viewpoint. Ginny is married to Ty and they don’t have any children, but Ginny secretively keeps trying. Ginny also has an extramarital affair with Jess Clark, son of Harold Clark the neighbor and best friend of Larry Cook. Jess has just returned to Zebulon County from the food corp. Given the basic character summary, one of the themes or recurrent ideas that was present throughout the whole book was domination. This domination concept was usually brought to life through the character, Larry Cook, over issues like farming, food, appearance or anything else that didn’t sit well with his expectations in life. Being that domination is not something tangible, conflicts such as the above mentioned were used to develop the theme idea into a concrete representation and also illustrate the effects that the domination theme had on the women of Zebulon County. The whole farming conflict begins when Larry Cook impulsively decides to distribute his one thousand acres of farmland to his three daughters and Caroline, the youngest daughter... ... with his opinions. In this male-dominated culture, it’s as if women are material possessions and the place of women is dependent on men. And at first, the women accepted this. Ginny remarks, "of course it was silly to talk about my point of view. When my father asserted his point of view, mine vanished" (176). And so did her dignity. Larry Cook, Farmer of the Year! In conclusion, the above conflicts portray the domination overtones and the effect that the domination had on the women. Larry Cook seems to be a jack of all trades. He is portrayed as being a god, a businessman, and a farmer. But Larry lacks when it comes to the being, Larry Cook, the father. He is so strict about having things done a certain way with little variations that it blinds him to the wants and needs of those around him. Initially the novel, Ginny suppresses her voice and remained an obedient figure. She has been cultured to believe that a woman has to rely upon the masculine authority figure. As Ginny’s character develops, she begins to break through the mental chains of masculine dependency and start a new life for herself without regret.

G4S Competitive Forces

According to â€Å"Management, 10th Edition† and Michael Porter’s model, when speaking in terms of competitive forces it should be viewed in five different areas; the first being the threat of new entrants. As for a company such as G4S Secure Solutions, the threat from new companies are pretty much non-existent. It being the top security firm worldwide, its threats comes from its larger competitors that are pretty much on their level and well established. Start-up security companies are challenged by the behemoths that dominate the market which are able to overshadow them by offering one stop shopping for multiple security needs. Also the smaller companies have often been taken over by the larger companies. According to Security Guard Magazine (www. securitymagazine. com), two in 10 of guarding firms say they purchased another firm in 2002, while 10 percent say they completed the purchase of another firm in the first half of last year. New companies do not appear to pose a threat to G4S Secure Solutions as they are well established and far ahead of its established competitors. The second of the competitive forces having an impact on the company is its competitive rivalries. The biggest rivalry to G4S Secure Solutions is Securitas Security Services. These two companies offer the same services and both also operate overseas which allows them to compete for business in the same markets. They often end up bidding against each other for contracts vying to provide the exact service for the least amount of dollars. Securitas Security Services entered the U. S. market in 1999 by acquiring Pinkerton and became the largest security firm in the world; they were already the leading protective service company in Europe. They have acquired numerous security firms; in one year alone they had acquired four firms. With them continuing to grow in assets and size, they continue to prove themselves as the most formidable rivalry in this market. The threat of substitute products also has an affect on the company. The consumers are always looking for a better or less costly product that could provide the same service. Businesses are also looking for the next big thing to revolutionize the market. There are some substitute products that have an impact on the company such as guard dogs, security cameras, rolling shutters, security tags, and added lighting.Guard dogs and rolling shutters eliminate the need for security officers altogether and they are a more cost efficient way to provide security. Department stores are now using security tags instead of officers; if someone leaves the store without the tag being removed it will activate an alarm at the door. Some people have the belief that just adding extra lighting to an area ensuring that it is well-lit can also deter burglars or criminals. Depending on the level of security needed, all of these products can be used as a substitute product. As a competitive force, the buyer does not influence what th e company sells, but the company has power over the buyer. This is a well established company that is known to provide top notch service; which also happens to be the top security firm. They do not have to continually lower their fees in order to attract customers. Their reputation is outstanding and many times, consumers may be willing to pay the extra dollars because they know they will be getting premium service with this company. When it comes to G4S Secure Solutions the power is in the hands of the supplier; they have their reputation to go own as they easily have the ability to influence potential buyers. Their resume speaks for itself, the largest security firm, servicing more places worldwide than any other firm, possibly the best trained personnel of security firms, and more trusted by the most prestigious companies than any other security firm. With a background as such, G4S Secure Solutions definitely has the competitive edge when it comes to luring coustomers.

Antibiotic Resistance In Bacteria Essays - Pharmaceuticals Policy

Antibiotic Resistance In Bacteria Essays - Pharmaceuticals Policy Antibiotic Resistance In Bacteria For about 50 years, antibiotics have been the answer to many bacterial infections. Antibiotics are chemical substances that are secreted by living things. Doctors prescribed these medicines to cure many diseases. During World War II, it treated one of the biggest killers during wartime - infected wounds. It was the beginning of the antibiotic era. But just when antibiotics were being mass produced, bacteria started to evolve and became resistant to these medicines. Antibiotic resistance can be the result of different things. One cause of resistance could be drug abuse. There are people who believe that when they get sick, antibiotics are the answer. The more times you use a drug, the more it will decrease the effect it has on you. That is because the bacteria has found a way to avoid the effects of that antibiotic. Another cause of resistance is the improper use of drugs. When patients feel that the symptoms of their disease have improved, they often stop taking the drug. Just because the symptoms have disappeared it does not mean the disease has gone away. Prescribed drugs should be taken until all the medicine is gone so the disease is completely finished. If it is not, then this will just give the bacteria some time to find a way to avoid the effects of the drug. One antibiotic that will always have a long lasting effect in history is penicillin. This was the first antibiotic ever to be discovered. Alexander Fleming was the person responsible for the discovery in 1928. In his laboratory, he noticed that in some of his bacteria colonies, that he was growing, were some clear spots. He realized that something had killed the bacteria in these clear spots, which ended up to be a fungus growth. He then discovered that inside this mold was a substance that killed bacteria. It was the antibiotic, penicillin. Penicillin became the most powerful germ-killer known at that time. Antibiotics kill disease-causing bacteria by interfering with their processes. Penicillin kills bacteria by attaching to their cell walls. Then it destroys part of the wall. The cell wall breaks apart and bacteria dies. After four years, when drug companies started to mass produce penicillin, in 1943, the first signs of penicillin-resistant bacteria started to show up. The first bacteria that fought penicillin was called Staphylococcus aureus. This bug is usually harmless but can cause an illness such as pneumonia. In 1967, another penicillin-resistant bacteria formed. It was called pneumococcus and it broke out in a small village in Papua New Guinea. Other penicillin resistant bacteria that formed are Enterococcus faecium and a new strain of gonorrhea. Antibiotic resistance can occur by a mutation of DNA in bacteria or DNA acquired from another bacteria that is drug-resistant through transformation. Penicillin-resistant bacteria can alter their cell walls so penicillin can not attach to it. The bacteria can also produce different enzymes that can take apart the antibiotic. Since antibiotics became so prosperous, all other strategies to fight bacterial diseases were put aside. Now since the effects of antibiotics are decreasing and antibiotic resistance is increasing, new research on how to battle bacteria is starting. Antibiotic resistance spreads fast but efforts are being made to slow it. Improving infection control, discovering new antibiotics, and taking drugs more appropriately are ways to prevent resistant bacteria from spreading. In developing nations, approaches are being made to control infections such as hand washing by health care people, and identifying drug resistant infections quickly to keep them away from others. The World Health Organization has began a global computer program that reports any outbreaks of drug-resistant bacterial infections. In the early 1900's, the discovery of penicillin began the antibiotic era. People thought they have finally won the battle with bacteria. But now since antibiotic resistance is increasing rapidly, new strategies must be developed to destroy these microbes. To many scientists the antibiotic era is over Bibliography Bylinsky, Gene. Assignment on Microeconomics 5 questions (350 words to each question) Essay

Assignment on Microeconomics 5 questions (350 words to each question) - Essay Example Cost when unoccupied $76.00, Minus dog care $8.00, Minus security firm $10.00 the balance is $58.00. We also consider depreciation that occurs in excess when someone is living in the house, the excess depreciation is $5, so we add the balance above which gives us $58 plus $5 equals $63. On the gardener's services, because the person renting the house takes care of the gardening services his cost of leaving his house unoccupied reduces by $10 therefore we get $63 minus $10 we get $53. The surgeon should reduce his tent by both the value of dog care and need for a security firm because this are taken care by the person living in the house so our value will be 53-18=35. Therefore the minimum amount the surgeon should accept to receive, as rent should be $35. Substitute goods are products that are similar in that they satisfy the same want, if one's good is not available one can substitute it with another example butter and margarine that are consumed with bread. Butter and margarine can be substitutes of one another. Perfect competitive market is a theoretical market structures in which there are many buyers and sellers with no individual power to influence market price. Prices are determined by demand and supplies in the market assumptions of a perfect competitive market are: Many buyers and sellers, Perfect mobility of factors of production, perfect knowledge, homogenous products, absence of externalities. (Hardwick, Khan & Langmead, p 91, 1997). The analysis of equilibrium price and quantity was by Alfred Marshall (1842-1924). He analyzed the demand curve and the supply curve and stated that where the two curves intersect, they give us the equilibrium price and quantity in the market. (Hardwick, Khan & Langmead, 1997). Qo is the equilibrium Quantity Po is the equilibrium price a) Equilibrium price of butter has increased and that the equilibrium quantity of bread has increased. Possible explanations are: I. Price of milk has decreased - If the price of milk decreases then we expect the price of butter to go down. This is explained by the fact that in production of butter, milk is the key input in the process. Therefore, a decrease in the price of butter cannot explain an increase in price of butter. II. Price of flour has decreased - If price of flour decreases we expect price of bread to go down because flour is the key input in production of bread. If price of bread decreases we expect an increase in the quantity demanded of bread. Therefore this explains the increase in equilibrium quantity of bread. On butter - as the bread demanded increases and having in mind that bread and butter are complementary goods. We expect the price of butter to go up also due to increased demand. Demand and Supply Curve for Bread Price Po P1 SSo 0 Quantity The decrease in price of flour causes the supply curve of bread to shift downwards from SSo to SS1 . our
